Never used AMD, building and need suggestion

I talked my buddy into building his own comp, and thought that I'd put an AMD in a setup this time. Problem is I don't know jack about AMD and respective mobos. I've picked out most of the stuff already, you can critique it if you want, but I'm mainly looking for mobo/proc recommendations. It's basically a medium to close to high end gaming system with some OC potential in its future if he ever figures out how to do it.

Coolermaster Case
1 gig PC3200 Corsair value select
Seagate 160GB Barracuda SATA
Chaintech 6600GT
NEC 3520A
Fotron 400w PS
Logitech MX Duo

Mobo gotta have PCI-E for the 6600GT, and moderately good onboard audio. Do AMD boards use dual channel RAM?....I dont know. I guess in "P4 terms" I'm looking for the proc to be about the equivalent of a 2.8-3.0C. Sorry guys, that probably sounds stupid but it's all I have to go by.

This things already at $760 and I told him it'd be less than $1000. Rearrange at will if necessary.

Thanks!

Socket 939 motherboards are dual channal, but dual channel and tight timings don't make as big of a differance with Athlon 64's due to the onboard memory controler. Even the lowest socket 754 A64 2800+ will be equivalent ot a 3.0c when it comes to gaming. Sombody with more experience with AMD will have to recomend a Motherboard. There aren't many A64 motherboards with PCIe yet, so if you absolutely have to use a PCIe video card, your choices will be very limited.

If you need PCIe you are pretty limited in your choices of motherboard right now. The A8N-SLI from ASUS is the most readily available and I have seen it hovering around $200. This one also supports SLI technology which allows two video cards to run in tandum. If you don't need that then you will have to wait for some nForce 4 Ultra chipset mbs to come out. I have seen a Chaintech available at Newegg but I am not too sure on their quality. Gigabyte and MSI should both have thier models out pretty soon as well. I have the ASUS board and I vouch for its stability and great performance so far. Then as far as processor goes, I would go with a 3200+ or a 3500+ Winchester core Athlon 64, these have smaller dies which have potentially better overclocking abilities.

Gigabyte has a sckt 939 mobo with pci-e for 150-160 range and couple that with a 3000+ or 3200+....

Save some money by dumping the 130 case...My Antec Soho case came with a lot of fans , clear side panel, HDD bays with fans, closing door oevr drives, and overall built very well for 1/2 that price....Heck for 130 you could get my case and a 430 watt antec true power....

Apply that saved money for the mobo which as mentioned are not cheap and not widely abundant for AMD platforms....

sis has some sckt 754 chapo baord with a pci-e slot....You could look into it but it is sis and all the headaches involved....

If it is what he wants....If you can get that board cpu combo that may leave room for that case, though I would like to see a better power supply....

does dell use steel or aluminum? This would be interesting to find out if steel actually reduces case noise...

Maybe I should just skip the PCI-E option...I'm having a hard time finding AMD mobos. The 6600GT is the perfect price and performance range for this build though 🙁

Actually that looks like a good deal. Thinking about getting the mobo from them, but then getting the 3000+ from newegg. I don't know anything about UnitedMicro though. Are they reliable?
