"Never reveal 100% of anything"

You know what distinguishes the guys who make it from the guys who always miss the cut? The ones who make it always have a plan; the other guys only have their bologna sandwiches and pipe dreams.

one of my golden rules is to never reveal 100% of anything to anyone. You reveal only what needs to be revealed to get a job done, or get your point across. Always withhold something -- 50%, 10%, even 1% of what you know. Don't just give away mamma's secret recipe to impress someone. That 1% you withhold is the small detail that will make you rich off the other guy, and not the other way around.

🙂

it's amazing seeing grown adults fail at this. oh well.

Sometimes, even if you don't reveal everything, it is still enough for someone to pick up on it.

Case in point: Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook idea was initially sparked by the idea of the Winklevoss twins.

Yep, some folks can read between the lines very well. Once that happens, they likely will not trust you OR your idea or plan will be "stolen". So if you are a one trick pony, and you need to hide your plan, I guess "hiding" it would be ideal. At some point, though, you will spend more time on manipulation and deflection rather than doing what needs to be done. creative thinking/problem prevention and problem solving skills....you become a master of bullshit, rather than a master/leader of your craft.

Can't read the article. Does it have anything relevant for people who aren't obsessed with getting the upper hand, advancing their careers at every opportunity, always trying to better their peers, or always making themselves look good? What about us peeps who are just happy where we are and don't care about other people's opinions?

^^^This

I don't play corporate games, and my knowledge is free for the asking if I have the time to give it. Making a clone of myself is my goal, and if someone can expand on that and take it farther, then great. Everybody wins in that case.

content with mediocrity, no thanks.

It depends. If you want to play nice - share. If you don't want to play nice - hoard information.

You will be successful in business if you do not share information. But, you will be hated and people will plot against you at every turn. Also, one slip up and you are no longer the only person controling the source where this information is coming from. And, you then spend most of you professional career watching over your back and plotting your next move. If you enjoy that, then it's great!

Personally, I would rather share. I have no desire to manipulate and piss people off.

You can still give away 99% of everything. Example: I can tell you how my script works, but I won't give you the exact script.

if you take it to the extreme then yes. I don't think they were advocating taking it to the extreme.

There are plenty of scenarios where if you withhold information it could lead to termination - or better go to jail. There are other full disclosure scenarios. Even in non-FD scenarios if you knew something that could have been critical to a decision making process and it is later found out that you didn't share the info, the powers above will frown upon you.

As for holding startup ideas for yourself - that's probably the worst advice. Ideas are a dime a dozen. Only execution matters. And sharing ideas help shape it to get it to a better place.

BS. If I make a script on the clock the company owns it, thats fine, I'll give it to them when I leave. But knowledge is stored in my head, I give out what I need to and keep the rest.
