waste of tax payers money frankly.
local libraries always whining about money....
considering my state (ca) is broke i look at the libraries offerings and just think wtf...

I agree completely!

The problem with libraries is that they lead to lerning and when people lern stuff they get all elitist and shit and then vote for people like Obama instead of the intrument of Our Lord And Savior, The Almighty George W. Bush. When people like Obama get elected the cycle of learning begins all over again, with money going to education and books and stuff, instead of war. Then people start to believe in lies like evolution and other scientific nonsense. And then this whole country will go to hell, except me and the members of my church who meet every Sunday at the local high school auditorium. We know that the only way to salvation is to shut out culture, comedy and any form of alternative viewpoint.

What we need is to get rid of libraries, abolish lerning, and elect the kind of God fearing Chrisitans who will make sure that this country stays on the education and lerning-free path to Heavenly Glory and not the book-lined path to eternal damnation

i guess obama voters like to make an ass out of themselves by not reading.
being able to "rent" the latest hollywood release or music cd from the local library has nothing to do with learning about sciene or evolution or anything in regards to general education.

next time, maybe you should actually read a thread before posting with bad sarcasm.

well it should be limited to books.
access to the latest dvds is not something tax payers should be funding. if you are so poor you can't afford a rental fee you probably don't have a dvd player.
expanding services+costs =expansion in general always seems to be the goal of government institutions.

i can agree with that. there is no reason the local library should have all the seasons of sienfield (wich it does)

Should the library not carry other popular works of fiction like Agatha Cristie or John Grisham? A library is a means of disseminating information and culture through media. The fact that media has expanded beyond print in the modern era should be reflected in the offerings by the library.

Agreed 100%. I don't see how you can draw a line between a fictional book and a fictional TV show... or for that matter a non-fiction book about "Planet Earth" and the TV series "Planet Earth"

Are audio-books acceptable in your world?

books are fine. libraries are place to encourage literacy, not indulge film buffs. the line is very easy to draw. videos that are explicitly documentaries are ok and always have been. it is only recently that libraries in some pathetic misguided attempt to bring in more punters have started trying to become tax funded blockbuster video stores.

Leave it to a McCaine voter to be completely ignorant of a subject about which they have a strong opinion.

The line that you draw does not exist. The mission of libraries is to store and disseminate KNOWLEDGE and INFORMATION, not to just encourage literacy. Knowledge and information can be stored in Books, magazines and periodicals, DVDs, the internet, CDs, Maps, Pictures, Databases and other media. For this reason, libraries provide access to all these types of media. If libraries were just confined to books then they would have disappeared in the late ninetees.

load of nonsense. distributing tv shows and film have nothing to do with the educational mission of libraries. if you want to stretch the definition that far they should carry video games as well because games like "call of duty" are about ww2 and could be considered immersive historical "art". if libraries really believed that their mission was to distribute entertainment media they would try to carry every film and cd possible and have a comprehensive collection...but they don't. it is because even they know it isn't their mission and they are just using an expensive gimmick in a lame attempt at luring in more people.

give me a break.

like it or not, making sure your citizens can read is more important to society than making sure they can watch films or listen to music which really requires no skill at all.

Many libraries have begun including video games in their childrens areas.

I recently started going to my local library as well. Normally I buy my books from Amazon, but I'm finding that many of the books I buy aren't worth keeping around as a reference. Checking these books out at the library makes sense.
