Ah, yes, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, what a masterpiece of a game. I think it wouldn't be exaggerration to say that KOTOR is the very best game set in the Star Wars universe (albeit non-cannon) to have ever been created on the Console platform. That game was EPIC for its time, and for Star Wars itself. I will never forget it. In fact I still use some KOTOR music today in Oblivion and it fits Oblivion's atmosphere and context surprisingly well, it just nourishes my undying nostalgia with the "good ol' days" of gaming.

To be honest I never even tried nor rented KOTOR 2, and I never was interested in it so I cannot comment on it, but I've read and heard often enough that it is just nothing when compared to the original. And as far as the Star Wars gaming universe goes I'd say that KOTOR is the third best Star Wars-based game I have ever played on any platforms, the first one being Jedi Outcast for me, and the second one being Clone Campaigns (both PC games). If you never played KOTOR I highly recommend it. Its grand quality and complexity of its story line will completely overshadow its dated graphics. You WILL like it. I don't know a single person who've played and finished KOTOR who actually never liked it.

You should give give KOTOR2 a go. It's a good game in its own right. Sadly it just happens to be a sequal to a masterpiece so it tends to get overlooked. The story was rushed at times, and the ending was a letdown...but it's still an enjoyable game.

I think KOTOR 2 is a better game, darker atmosphere, influence but the rushed last third of the game somewhat kills it. However Team Gizka is restoring the cut content (cut content including recorded dialog is on the disk) and that should make KOTOR 2 significantly better.

I cant say anything new.
You must play it.
When you do, you will want to play the sequel.
It will let you down.
You will still be happy you did.

Both are great games. I compare them to Fallout and Fallout 2. The second game doesn't have as good of a story, but the graphics are tweaked, the interface is MUCH improved, and the character system is MUCH improved.

Between both games there is easily months of game play if you try all the angles.

I heard many good things about KOTOR, but I hated it when I tried it not too long ago. The graphics are abysmal compared to todays games, and I found the gameplay to be quite boring since I felt like I did all this so many times before in other games. I am assuming that back when this game came out, it had many novel elements such as "fighing in an arena", but at this point I played many games that have all this and more. I am not a graphics whore, and I always put gameplay above gfx. I am a big fan of games such as Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale. I like Star Wars too.. But I didn't like KOTOR.

Meh... it wasn't bad, but nowhere near what it was hyped up to be. If it weren't set in the Star Wars universe, it would not have been as popular. The story is good, but compared to the real gold that was Baldur's Gate I & II, it was mediocre. Guess I went in with too high of an expectation.

Play it, then get the Jedi mod and play it again, so you can start out as a Jedi!

Then play it again, only this time, switch between light and dark (whichever you played first, do the opposite)

I'm surprised that so many people are saying "the engine is dated." It actually looks pretty good, especially for back then. The light sabers look amazing.

spoiled people 😉 sure it's no oblivion or crysis, but it looks good enough. you don't play it for its graphics anyway.

SNES games on a 24" would be dated

You're a regular Sherlock Fucking Homes aren't you?

The game is five years old, what did you expect? It to look like Crysis?

I'm not much into RPG's, but if you're into FPS games, then you should definitely try Stalker, Bioshock and COD4. I played all 3 and never regretted buying any one of them.

I don't think anyone ever expected it to be better than BG1 and 2. But having a game be close shouldn't be a bad thing.

for sure, play it.

i never could make it through trying to be completely evil... it's just not in me 😛

i am finding the same thing in Jade Empire and it was like that in Fable too... i just have more fun being the good guy...

So I am finishing up HL2:Ep2 and am looking for the next game. I was thinking Stalker, Bioshock, or CoD4.

I noticed that you included CoD4, an online multiplayer FPS in the list, so out of curiosity, why aren't you at all interested in Unreal Tournament 3? (Not saying you should buy it; I just like doing research into why that game is treated like chopped liver.)

I have never liked any of the UT... dont know why... last game of that sort that I enjoyed was Quake 3 arena.

Dont know why though...

KOTOR is an excellent game and should be played no matter how long ago it came out. The graphics aren't that dated, especially if you play it on PC.

I remember 4 years ago I played it 1.5x in 2 weeks... during school time... it was damn addicting. I played about half of it as a good character... and then I read about a bug in the PC version that allowed you to become ultimately bad early on in the game. I started over and proceeded to wreck havoc 🙂

KOTOR won't work on my LCDs. There is a problem with the engine that the dev's wouldn't patch last time I tried it. NWN plays fine because they did patch it. Has anyone played KOTOR recently enough on an LCD at 1280x1024 or higher with sucess?

Look at Widescreen Gaming Forum, they might have some tips to make it work on your monitor. I'm playing it at 1680*1050 right now...
