So I am finishing up HL2:Ep2 and am looking for the next game. I was thinking Stalker, Bioshock, or CoD4. Then I ran across a KOTOR 3 thread and I remembered how much people loved those games.

Should I try out KOTOR? Can you compare the style of the game to anything else? I was always a big fan of console RPGs, and some oldschool PC RPGs.

Any advice would help, as I might be gameless soon. (besides wow)

I would say KOTOR is similar to NeverWinter Nights 2 in gameplay. You cant really compare it to anything that you listed in the OP.

More similar to Diablo II than Oblivion, but still not too close. It's single player, for one thing. It's pretty linear - you can do some side quests, but area progression goes with storyline. Combat is essentially turn-based with dice rolls, but plays out in real-time rather fluidly. There are a lot of moral choices involved - you become more good or evil depending on the choices made and get different responses and bonuses.

I would not compare it to either... Diablo is hack and slash that is not at all turn based... Obliv is more of a fps...

Would maybe compare to the nwn series ... or possibly more traditional crpgs.

Yes, story and gameplay is good although the graphics will be a bit dated these days.

It has a good story, enjoyed it when I played it sometime last year. There are some hilarious moments, especially between Bastila and Mission Vao.

I liked KOTOR 1 way more than KOTOR 2... actually really disappointed with the 2nd game. Story wasn't near as good, way too predictable.

The first game was awesome. Now, obviously, the graphics will look a little dated, but it's a great game regardless. I liked it better than the Neverwinter Nights games...

IMO It's one of the top Star Wars games ever made. Granted, the competition is a little weak, but it's still a great game.

You can probably find the games pretty cheap, definitely worth it... I played through it 3 times, Light Side, Dark Side, and "Mercenary".... Pretty unique experience each time.

Definitely. It's a modern classic imho.

If you like console RPGs I"m pretty sure you'll like it. Its structure is very similar to that of a console RPG, heavily plot-driven, lots of cutscenes and dialogue, while the game play is more western (D&D style).

"Mercenary"? Meaning you take the choice that gets you money? That's evil most of the time.

KotOR 1 is the best Star Wars game ever made. The only title that might hold a candle to it in that arena is Tie Fighter...maybe.

Aside from that, it's a damned solid RPG, with some of the best writing and voice acting ever put into electronic entertainment.

What I'm trying to get to here is yes, you should play it. As soon as possible. Beware the sequel: It's a letdown. KotOR 1 was far better.

Ah, yes, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, what a masterpiece of a game. I think it wouldn't be exaggerration to say that KOTOR is the very best game set in the Star Wars universe (albeit non-cannon) to have ever been created on the Console platform. That game was EPIC for its time, and for Star Wars itself. I will never forget it. In fact I still use some KOTOR music today in Oblivion and it fits Oblivion's atmosphere and context surprisingly well, it just nourishes my undying nostalgia with the "good ol' days" of gaming.

To be honest I never even tried nor rented KOTOR 2, and I never was interested in it so I cannot comment on it, but I've read and heard often enough that it is just nothing when compared to the original. And as far as the Star Wars gaming universe goes I'd say that KOTOR is the third best Star Wars-based game I have ever played on any platforms, the first one being Jedi Outcast for me, and the second one being Clone Campaigns (both PC games). If you never played KOTOR I highly recommend it. Its grand quality and complexity of its story line will completely overshadow its dated graphics. You WILL like it. I don't know a single person who've played and finished KOTOR who actually never liked it.

Kotor is one of the finest Star Wars related games ever, if not THE finest. Kotor2 is a little lacking and live up to expectations after you play through the orig. Kotor.

I'd rate it in the Top 5 Role playing games I've ever played, and I've played a lot of them. Brilliant game, with a brilliant story. Try to avoid any spoilers before playing it.
