First 3 numbers are geographic. That means that, for every area, there are 9,999,999 available numbers. There are not 998,999,001 Americans.

And if I'm not mistaken, they ARE reused.
 
Wait isn't it... 10 possible combinations?

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Since there are _9_ possible spots to have these numbers,

10^9 = 1 Billion

Well, you're not EXACTLY right, in that there are actually 999,999,999 possible numbers, as opposed to 1,000,000,000, but you're a hell of a lot closer than I was! This thread is a by-product of the kind of thinking I sometimes do when I'm significantly distracted (in this case, by watching Kill Bill for about the fifth time). At least I'm not charging a client hundreds of dollars an hour at the moment . . .
