Now his internet doesn't work, & the ISP claims it's the ethernet card.

Couldn't you verify that over the phone, one way or the other?

In the past two weeks, ,I have repaired one computer where the capacitors were bulging and the cooling fan on the radeon video card stopped spinning. I had to change both components but the other three computers had software problems. Even if I tell the other neighbor or friend to buy a dell, 80% of the time most likely it is going to be viruses, worms, spyware or other related software problems that Dell won't touch or able to support.

Oh well...

always have backup parts ready.

i have several parts laying around cause friends come to me complaining their computers don't work or are having problems. i bring my backup parts to solve it.

all the computers I've ever built are rock solid. they NEVER call me for support.

my secret? I shop from tigerdirect!

If you charge and they are closeby then it's no big deal. Always, Always, Always have a contract what will be done, what time of day it will done and never build a super low end machine. If you don't like the parts someone picks out then do not build the machine.
