NetZero Problems, and a Test

With http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=39&threadid=338825 plan to use the Dnet client as a security measure, I belive that we need to reanalyze what we know about NetZero, and their supposed "ban" of Dnet clients. Mentioned in a previous post, a user couldn't get their client to update correctly using NetZero. However, once we isolated NetZero as the culprit, we left it as that. However, since Windogg now might use NetZero as part of his plan, it is imperative to not only him, but to TA in general that we isolate the problem to if NetZero truely has a "ban", and what it will take to get around it.

So, I'm asking for a few volunteers with modems to sign-up for NetZero's free service, and attempt to test their clients. In order to minimize problems, I ask that each voluteer stick with these rules:

Pick a Baby Bovine that listens on ports http://www.iodbbs.com/tappstatus.cgi.
Do the tests all durring the same time, in order to avoide BB downtime.
Do the tests more than once.

Hopefully, if these tests do prove that this "ban" exists, then this will be a port issue that can be fixed in an update to the Dnet FAQs. Good luck guys, and thanks for helping the team.=)

PS Just post your results in here guys

Modems??? You mean, people still connect through Modems???:Q

If I can find a Modem somewhere, I still have an account with NetZero. Wonder how it will perform with DSL on my line as well. Hmm.

Virge I had that same problem with netzero. I tried 5 different proxies before I gave up. But iInever did try a different port. I think I will try port 82 this time around and see wwhat happens.

Oh, this effected my pproxy.

Whats a modem look like? 😉

and a bump for this needed thread, come on people!!!!!!
if i had one i'd help 🙂

WHOA!!! Thanks for the heads up ViRGE. I'm thinking about getting something like AT$T Worldnet to dupe some hapless thief.

To show my appreciation, I have put a 2Mb S3 ViRGE video card into the server at home. 🙂

...and good luck getting the fricken NZ client. I went to their website to install it on a customers PC two nights ago and they had a message: "The maximum number of daily downloads has been reached. Please order the CDROM version (like $10) or try again later." Man, I'm glad I went to DSL. The whole free internet system went south over the past 6 months starting with the demise of the great worldspy bannerless service.

Virge - Has anyone tried Juno or any other free services. Here's a LIST.. From my experience, anyone who relies on just a single free service is seriously hurting if they want a dependable method of getting on the net. 😀

ViRGE, ok I have Netzero setup as a backup just in case. I tried it and it seemed to work just fine. Dnet received the blocks and sent out the finished blocks just fine. It was just a lot slower than I am used to with my normal ISP. Other than the slowness it seemed to work just fine. What was supposed to be the problem?

I tried it this morning with Netzero version 3.0.4 and the latest version of the dnet client. it fetched and flushed fine. I'm still playing around with it, but so far, I haven't had any problems.

Has anyone else tried it?

I just got my mandatory upgrade to 3.1.2 and now I can't update. I've tried using all three ports: 2064, 80, and 23. I'm on my way out the door, but I have a few things I want to try.

I haven't done any specific tests, but one of my buddies has been using netzero for 6 months now. He's in my herd and I am quite certain he *was* still able to run dnet up untill last week. He just got DSL, so I can't test anything.

I just fetched and flushed successfully. My INI file is below, can someone else try it?
