NetZero Hi-Speed 3G?

What do you think? Are services like this actually going to compete well with true broadband speeds? I know the service works using compression and caching...is it actually effective, though?

Eh... no.

Even if you shotgun a bunch of v.92s and use image compression, you're not gonna get nearly the bandwidth of an el-cheapo broadband connection.

Many pages not contain video/images. The compression ignores those items also.

Will never come up to broadband speed, let alone shotgunning and it probably not worth the extra cost unless you price your neffing time accordingly.

i don't see how it can compete with basic dsl @15 bucks/month...

Most can't get DSL at $15, let alone a lot don;t even have home phones anymore. That and a lot can't get DSL or even cable internet at all.

So a faster dial up is better then nothing.

Where the hell can you get DSL for $15/month? In this area, the cheapest broadband you can get is DSL for $29.95 through Verizon, and even that is only 3 Mbps, compared to Comcast's 4.

$15 is either an introduction price for only a few months or it's for significantly throttled connections like ISDN (128Kbps up, 128Kbps down)

They're one of AOL's biggest competitors. They've had steady income/profit since I was in highschool.

When I was in middle school they were free, and had an ad-banner that could be hacked around. So much for Net"Zero".

I used them a long time ago and haven't heard of them since. There was a big class-action lawsuit against them a few years ago for promising unlimited access and limiting heavy users. That's all I remember.

Yup, they were my first internet/email provider. I remember that ugly banner. It was a bitch with a computer that could barely handle 640x480. 🙁 Moving around on webpages was like drying to dodge that damn magnifying quick-link bar in OSX 😛

This relies on:

A) V.92 modems that WORK (I've seen one)
B) Text compression (most dialup ISPs do this anyway)
C) ISP-side image downsampling+caching
D) Stupid, stupid people.
E) Phone lines that will work with V.92

you say a lot don't even have home phones anymore, then what's the point of dial up?
