Networking XP and 2000

I'm having problems networking my desktop, running XP, and my laptop, running 2000. I have them hooked up via their network cards using a cat-5 crossover cable. I have them both logged in the same user name, setup under same workgroup. My laptop can see the desktop in the network, but when I try to click on it I get a error message saying it is not mapped. Meanwhile, my desktop cannot even see the other computer. Please advise.

Thanks

It should work even with your same user names, but if not then try below.

Change the logon user names for each PC to different names.
Then share the specific resources on each PC with Autheticated User type. Under the User manager, make sure that on your XP PC, the user for the 2000 PC is entered as an additional user. Under the 2000 PC make sure the user on the XP PC is entered as an additional user.
