Networking woes!

Hey Folks,

I have a little networking problem. :)

In mIRC/MSN/YAHOO/AIM I get disconnected randomly. Like in mIRC, I will get blocks of information for the past 5 minutes in 1/2 second. Either that, or I will just completely get disconnected. In AIM, the "reconnect dialog" box will come up a lot, whether I am typing to someone or not. I have thought it was just my main rig, so I installed mIRC on another system, and it had the same symptoms.

Does anyone know what I can do about this, or how to trouble shoot it? I know there are plenty of diagnostics type programs out there, but i'm not 100% sure on what to look for and how to spot the problem. I think it may have to do with MTU size, and not neccessarily the equipment. (I'm running a brand spanking new BEFSR41, and new motorola cable modem). Any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate.

What is your OS?. Can you browse the internet normally? Do you stay connected for any length of time?
Do a speed test at http:// miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/ after the test finishes hit the more details button and see what it says, then do a tweak test at www.dslreports.com/tweaks and see what it says. If it suggest changes, download DrTCP from their site and make the changes recommended.

well,

just called up my ISP. They basically said "plug directly into the cable modem, and see if you can download the files." Sadly, when I did plug directly into the cable modem, the files were successfully installed. So strange, the BEFSR41 is BRAND NEW, and I had a BEFSR41 linksys router there before, and exchanged it for a brand new, thinking that was the problem.

He said "it is most likely a File transfer protocol problem, since you can browse fine".

I've also just disabled DHCP within the BEFSR41 router, plugged in the DNS and gateway information in my network properties on this computer. I got the internet, went to download a 28mb file, and it got to 9mb. !!!!

Any other suggestions peoples?

is it possible that the ETHERNET CORD LENGTH is causing the problem? The length of the cord goes into where the radio is, is probably 130 feet.

alright here is a test i did:

I have plugged cable modem into a switch and have uplink on. Then the only other cord from the switch goes to the BEFSR41. From there, all the computers are hooked up.

I had a file from ATI.com that is 28.1mb. I first started out and downloaded the file, and it failed. I then thought of changing the MTU size.

Default: 1500
I did the following and all failed:
1462
1362
1300
1200
1100
1000
900
800

When I got to 700, it downloaded it successfully 2 out of 4 times. Of the 2 that failed, it was random (3.4mb out of 28.1mb and 18.29mb out of 28.1mb).

I have noticed with the MTU size on the router set to 700, that I stay connected to mIRC longer before getting disconnected. However, the problem still remains.

it is possible that You have a router that blocks port. You will have to enable port forwarding. Go to web management by entering router's IP and then add the appropriate port number snd the appropriate computer IP number.

I remember having BEFSR41, and had to enable port forwarding to transfer file in MSN. My p2p program disconnect me randomly when I don't enable port forwarding.

This might be the problem. But once you set port forwarding, you'll have to give your PC static IP.

well, the file downloaded twice in a row....... (the 28.1mb one). This is in IE.

in Mozilla it failed

my MSN/aim/yahoo and mIRC still drop me consistantly.
