Networking with win2000 and win98

I'm new here, I searched a bit through the forums and could not find a solution to my problem.

I cannot get windows98 to network with windows2000. I discovered this as the procedure I was used to in setting up win98 machines was to no avail. I can ping from a computer with win98 to 2000 and vice-versa, but I cannot share files or anything. What could be the problem? If this has been brought up already, I appologize.

In case this is relevant, I am set up as an administrator in win2000. Is there something I have to disable or enable as administrator to successfully network my PC? There must be some setting screwed up or something as my system information displays all ??? in every field. I'm thinking this is related.

You have to create a user account on the Win2k machine for the Win98 machine(s) to connect as.
 
At this point, you should be able to get from the 2k box to anything on the 98 box, but not the other way around. The solution is, as minendo said, create a user account for that computer on the 2k box. Its been a long time since I used 98 but I'm pretty sure it doesn't ask for a username, so the user you create for it in Win2k has to be the same as the computer name.
 
I am running 2000 and i have 8 other computer running 98. is there any way I can share to them with out having to make a user account for all of them? I thought i have done it before but, i have forgotten now. I want them to just be able to select my shares just like you can do from a 98 computer to a 98 computer.
 
I think the FAQ forgets to mention you need to remove the "$" from the share names in 2K.

For example C: is shared by default as C$. This means it is shared but not visible on the network unless you map to it. Win98 cannot map drives. The solution is to create a new share for the c: drive as "C" without the $. Then the c: drive will be visible from network neighborhood.

It isnt possible to remove these shares ($). They are administrative shares and while you can disable them, they will be re-newed on reboot or a restart of the server service.
What you mean is, create a new share at the same level, and leave the $ out?
