Networking with DI-604

I recently purchased a laptop and want to set up file sharing between it and my desktop computer via the DI-604 D-link router I have. I would also like to network the one printer I have that is hooked up to my desktop via a USB cable so I can print stuff from my laptop. I have XP Home running on both systems. I am not very good with computers so a step by step would be most helpful...or perhaps someone could provide me with a link where a step by step can be found. I'm sure there are a number of ways to go about performing such a task...if I am correct I would ask to be given the easiest, least obtrusive (as far as items being installed or stuff showing up on my desktop), and most efficient method possible. I called D-Link but they told me they don't support file sharing and wouldn't provide me with any solution.
