I have 2 computers and I wanted some instructions for networking them together. I have the cable/nic cards. So what I would like to do is to network the two pc's so that I can burn cd's on the one that will not be hooked up to the monitor/keyboard/mouse. CAn someone tell me how to go about setting this up? Both pc's are running Win 98SE if that matters. I want to be able to share the cdrw and hard drive on the secondary computer through my primary pc.

If you don't need to have internet access then use Net Beui, other wise install TCP/IP protocol.

1. Install a NIC card per puters.

2. Boot puters and follow wizard walk through to install the NIC divers and apropriate protocols.

3. Both puters have to have unique name and in the same workgroup (If use TCI/IP then both puters need to config same Subnet Mask, but each with unique IP address)

4. Under Control Panel > Network, install and enable Printer and File Sharing for MS Network.

5. Right click: drive, folder, or printer to share that particular resource.

* Note, to config Workgroup & Puter name, goto: Control Panel > Network > Identification.

** Config, TCP/IP, goto: Control Panel > Network > TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter > IP Address > Specify an IP Address. (could use the address that your IP service provider give to you...Log on to the internet service and type WINIPCFG at Dos Promt to get the static IP & Gateway. Also could use the Default Subnet provided if you want, but you could just make up your own)

if you dont want to use a hub get a cross over cable. Also install IPX while you are at it. And get 100mbps cards if you want to burn direct off of another one

OK, Thanks everyone. Let me make sure I am making sense before I actually try this. I have an extra pc with a cdrw and cdrom drive in it. I want to use my main system and tell the second system to burn cd via network. So the source disc and the blank would both be in the second pc. This is more of an experiment instead of necessity. Just thought it would be interesting to do. So, will this work the way you all said? I already have a patch cable and the two cards.
Thanks

Sounds like your after more of a remote management/usage of the 'host' PC - once you network the two PC's together, you can use a remote control package like PcAnywhere (or others) over TCP/IP to actually 'see' the other desktop and do anything you want as if you were at the PC's keyboard and monitor.

Otherwise, normally when people say 'network' 2 PC's in the traditional sense, you can map resources (such as disk drives, CDs, printers) as if they were attached to your PC. I suppose if you could map to the burner and to a hard drive you could burn from the mapped hard drive to the burner, but all data would be flowing from the host pc, to yours, back to the host. That might cause problems ...
