Networking Trouble

I have aliant DSL and i had to install software to connect to the net. I used to have cable internet and i never had to do that before. So when i wasn't using the router after i installed the software for the net i get my firewire ports and my local area connection and a High-Speed Connection Manager in network connections. The high speed connection manager is a wan miniport(PPPOE)

After i had the net working i unhooked everything and put the router in and hooked everything back up. As i said everything is wired and the wireless capabilities are turned off.

After doing this i ran the xp network setup wizard and i can get a connection working on my system but i cannot access second computer and the second computer cannot access my computer or the net.

There are tons of options for the router like using DHCP or PPPOE and i'm not sure what to use. I read that you shouldn't use PPPOE if your modem is using PPPOE. Not sure what that means.

I tried setting up both pcs in the "my computer connects to the net through a hub" option and i was able to get both computers networked but then as soon as i dial in to the net the computers loose their connection to each other and my main computer is the only one online.

Not sure what other info would be important.
Thanks for any help you can give.

By the sounds of it, your modem doesn't handle PPPoE. You said you needed to setup a XP pppoe connection when directly connected to the modem?

If so, you just need to configure your router for PPPoE. That should enable a username/pw field. Which is usually your email address and pw you registered with them (see if your ISP requires the domain in the userid to authenticate).

PPPoE - Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet is the method of etablishing a connection thru authentication. Most DSL ISPs use this for their dynamic and these days even static accounts. Hope this helps.

Since you are using PPPoE on router, you won't need the broadband connections on the XP machine. Don't use the broadband profile if you are using the router. You mentioned they can't see each other when you use the broadband connection, because your ISP won't support two PPPoE sessions. It will access the internet thru it's local area connection.

If you setup your PPPoE connection correctly on router, you should be able to goto your routers status page and see that it says PPPoE connection "connected" with a public ip listed. If it's not working, the userid/pw may be incorrect, or you are not plugged into the WAN port from your modem. It's important that the modem is plugged into the wan/internet port on router, or else this will not work properly.

Plug the 2 computers into the router (port 1, 2, 3,or 4) unless of course they are wireless. By default, XP should be set to obtain everything automatically in the TCP/IP. They should grab an IP address from the router of 192.168.x.y. Make sure both have file/printer sharing enabled and can surf the net before you try to share files. Both should see be able to see each other and be on a local area network.
