Hi i need some advise about the tittle,

im a sophomore in high school (note: it's High Shool :)) and it's a few weeks away from choosing the classes for next year, i want to take networking next year, but a friend of mine said that i need to have a pretty good idea about the internet. But unfortunately i don't know a lot about the internet (excpet surfing the net :( ).... so should i take networking class next year (networking 1).. or i should take some other classes before i take networking?

thx for any suggestions

Take the class. It should start pretty basic. If you want to learn the stuff you should have no trouble keeping up.

Networks exists long time before the Internet, and will stay long after.

You don?t need to know the Internet in order to take Network class.

what an IP address is and what it means. have fun!

wish I had networking classes in high school. Only pascal and fortran (we were considered an "advanced" computer learning center for the nation) go figure

lucky bastard.

It really depends on the level of the course is. You might want to know a little bit about programming and maybe have some UNIX (Linux) knowledge.

Look around a little. Almost all business have 2 or more machines networked together and someone had to set it up and maintain it. It really does not have anything to do with the internet. A very good skill to have. TAKE THE CLASS

WOW I wish I would have had such an opportunity in high school. I only graduated a couple years ago, and the only computer class we had was Basic programming. I'd recommend you take it. You can't go wrong! If you've got any questions throughout the year post back on this forum and I'm sure you'll get any kind of help that you need!

highschool classes generally suck (tooooo eeeaassy)
but i'm taking computer repair just like another study hall cause i could prolly teach the class

i skipped keyboarding, html, and basic c++ so now i'm in AP c++. that is an excellent class

they have a 2 year networking class @ my school but since i have setup several networks its not really worth the time.

but in answer to your question, i would take the class if you want a good intro to the subject

<It really depends on the level of the course is. You might want to know a little bit about programming > .... what kind of programming should i learn, javascript? (i hope it's c++, because im learning it now... :))

Bleep: actually my school (more than 200 computers) are on a network, we can use our own usernames and passwords to log on any of the pcs that are on the campus:Q!

PS. Thanks for the suggestions guys, i've decided that im going to take networking next year, to see how's it like.
CBuxton: Im sure that im going to have a lot of questions! :)

I wish I had a class like that in high school, but they did not and I was forced to learn on my own. The only thing we had in high school was Pascal and VB. Keep in mind though the enitre school was on a Mac network. Know how we used VB, Virtual PC.

lol, take the class. When I was in HS (note, I'm in college now), I took Networking I at the local community college (100 level class), it was a breeze. I'm taking networking at my school here (400 level class), and it's a bit harder, but only a bit. :)

crazychicken:heh thx, took me a while to come up w/ the signature... my first one was kind of dumb :p

<for not being a programmer thats a cool signature >, if you meant me as not being a programmer, I am a programmer (C++2, still have a lot more to learn:Q)

C, C++ will be fine. You might have to write your own program to simulate network in UNIX environment.

And you might want to check your "hello" stuff again. :) I remember someone said "it (your program) doesn't work until you have tested it." crazychicken was just trying to be nice.;)

You should also get a book like "network for dummies". I'm not implying anything, these beginner books explain a lot in simple language.

I am a Network Admin at a High School. Here is what I would recommend if you know very little about Networks and computers in general:

Get an easy to read networking book (Networks for Dummies or some such book). This should give you the basics for the class. Most of the High School level "Intro to Networking" classes start very basic. If you aren't familiar with Computers and Hardware in general, I would also suggest getting a book on that subject. You don't need to start with any intermediate or advanced books or Certification type books. Start at the beginning and let the class take you from there.

Hope this helps and good luck.
