Networking Question: Media Sharing

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a question. I downloaded Windows Media Player 11 on my laptop so I can now stream my media to my xbox 360. This much works fine.. no problems. I have a desktop PC with alot of good movies on it so I got a crossover cable and connected it to my laptop with sharing enabled. What I'm finding is I can't be on the wireless network and have my local area network connection working at the same time. Is this simply the case, you can't do both? I am not to familiar with networking.. Is there anyway I can make this work?

Just make a persistent route to that ip address by using the "route" command. Just tell it to route packets for the desktop to the wired interface. Should be easy.

Can ya just plug the desktop into the network and share files normally?

No. I only have one Ethernet cable (four roommates each have a router port..) Sot the xbox 360 have the hard connection, my laptop has the wireless connection, and my desktop is connected to the laptop via USB.
