Networking Problem

I am having such a hard time trying to network two computers together. Any suggestions and help is much appreciated.

The two computers are running win98se. They are connected thru a hub. Pretty straight forward, right? Their setups are pretty much identical. They both have Netbuei and TCP/IP protocols, Microsoft Client, Network adapter installed. The hub and the two NIC are all 10/100.

The transfer rate going from computer no. 1 to no. 2 is fine. But the transfer rate from no. 2 to no. 1 is so slow. It takes forever just trying to bring up the contents on the hard drive. Does anyone have any suggestions?
 
Check on the computer computer no. 2's network adapter properties and see if there is a transmission threshold option. Try different settings with that.
 
Believe it or not, I've run into that exact same problem. Mine has mysteriously gone away and I'm left without an explaination. (sorry)
Some recent changes I've made include - removing all protocols except TCP/IP, removing Dial-Up adapter, buying a new Intel Pro 100+ NIC, buying a 3Com 100BT OfficeConnect 8-port HUB. So one of those things solved the problem for me.

Try swapping NICs and see if the problem follows the NIC. If so, you know what to do. I wish I could help you more, because I was ready to throw my computer out the window when I had that problem!
 
I am not sure if there is another way to fix this problem other than doing a clean install of your OS on the computer giving you the problem. For some reason the networking side of Win95/98 gets corrupted and even reinstalling your network adapter doesn't help...then you should try reinstalling the OS and do it yourself without the help of a recovery disk. Here are the steps I would try first.

1. Remove everything from your Network Properties...all clients, devices, and protocols. Go into your System Properties and remove your Network Adapter from there.
2. Restart your computer despite the fact you'll get messages telling you that your network is incomplete.
3. Upon reboot, reinstall your Network Adapter and then add the clients, devices, and protocols you wish to load.
4. Reboot once more and try it again.

If it's still slow then I would either try another Network card, try to get an updated set of drivers or reinstall Windows98. I hope that helps you, but that it about the only solutions I've ever come up with when troubleshooting a slow connection. Remember one more thing to check is the cables and also make sure you don't have any unneccesary bindings or protocols installed. PEACE OUT!
 
I tried another NIC; same result. I tried removing all protocols, service and client and reinstalling them on both machines; same result. I don't have ICS installed.

I hope I don't have to reinstall the OS, it is a real pain.
