Networking Problem

How's this for a kick in the ass: I originally tried to help the authour of another thread who had the same problem because this is the network I have, one puter XP, the other 98. I recently set up a wireless network in my house, and all was grand. Until now!!! I can no longer share files or the printer, and can't see the other computer on the network.

I have a Dlink DI 524 wireless router, the XP machine is hooked to that, the 98 machine is using a Dlink wireless pci card. The wireless internet connection is working fine, but not my networking group I set up.

I used to have the 98 machine networked with a 95 machine so when I got the XP, I just added that to the network, I actually don't remember doing anything but having it use the same workgroup and voila, it was fine. But now a few weeks later nothing. I assume it must have something to do with the router but what?

I've tried the suggestion to use Netbuei , however I can't find the necessary files becasue I dont have a XP CD. My Hp machine came preloaded with WinXP, and didn't include the CD. Again I assume that the files must be on the computer somewhere but where? I tried looking (in hidden files/folders) but no dice.

Any help here, I thought I was a newbie hero because everything was working fine but now ...

Two files need to be put in the right place.

nbf.sys into C:\windows\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS

netnbf.inf into C:\windows\INF

Then log to Network Properties and Install the Protocol.

Where do I find those files? As I wrote I don't have the WinXP disc, I assume the info is on my computer somewher but where? I did a search for the files but nothing (and yes I looked in the hidden files and folders).

My question is how did this change, it was working fine?

These files are on the original WinXP CD. The same files from Windows 2000 might work too.

You do not have it ask the Vendor of your WinXP to send it to you. Or call Microsoft Support and try to plead your case.

Forget abpout the files for now, I have found them on the web. I will try to install them when I get home. However another question comes to mind: how come the wireless internet conection is working fine, but the file sharing is not? And why did it work at first but not now? The only thing I changed (I think) was opening some ports on the router to allow various gaming apps as well as WinMx. What am I missing here?

Again my setup is this: DSL modem going to DLink wirelss router. XP machine connected directly to router, 98 machine has a DLink wireless PCI card installed.

I have a similar problem. My winXP PC was connecting to my Linksys router just fine then all of a sudden it decides that it doesn't want to accept the IP address that the DHCP issues from the router, which wouldn't allow it to connect to the internet, router, or the other computers.:disgust:

I tried the following:
1. From the run command typed in CMD.
2. ipconfig/flushdns
3. ipconfig/registerdns
4. ipconfig/release
5. ipconfig/renew
6. Uninstalling the Ethernet card, restart and let it reinstall
7. Updated the drivers for my Ethernet card
8. Made sure all of the appropriate services are running
9. Even tried uninstalling the TCP/IP protocol in the network properties (unsuccessful in doing this, it wouldn't let me)
10. I finally had to assign a static IP address on that PC and it connects just fine. (i.e. IP Address 192.168.1.XX, Subnet Mask 255.XXX.XXX.XXX, Gateway 192.168.1.XX, DNS Servers 1ST 24.168.XX.XX 2ND 64.74.XX.XX)

My question is the same as sjgmoney, what in the world causes this? How do you fix it? I would rather my pc obtain an IP address if at all possible but it want. My pc is free of viruses, adware, and spyware, man I'm about ready to say @#$%^%^ with it. sjgmoney, maybe you can try some of these things I listed above and just maybe you'll have better luck than me. BTW I found some of these things on some other forums.

Edit: BTW Most people in this forum are using bump in their replies, what in the world does that MEAN?

First off bump is just away to make a post to "bump" your post to the top of hte list where hopefully someone will post a helpful hint.

Here's what I did so far: Last night I checked the static IP I had set for my XP and it wasn't using it, it was back to "find one automatically". I had assigned one originally for my gaming purposes, so I did that again. Didn't bother checking the network because the othe computer is in my son's room and he was asleep.

This morning I turned on my son's computer, checked the wireless signal (all fine) and took a shower. Got out of the shower and checked the network neighborhood: Guess what, all was fine, both computers showing up!!!!

I don't really know why, having done a lot of searching on this topic (and boy are there a ton of people with the same problem!) I think that WIN98 just has a hard time always recognizing and "finding" the network, maybe wirelessly causes an even bigger delay in "logging on". Maybe using Netbeui will fix this but for now I'm not going to touch it.

Anyone explain THIS?

sometimes the computers are connected although they disappeared from network neighborhood.

to check if they are connected although they don't show up, try this:

open up the run box (start - run), and type the computer name that you want to connect to, in this form: //computername
so let's say you have computers named 'livingroom' and 'bedroom' and you are looking that 'bedroom' does not show up at 'livingroom''s network neighborhood, you type: //bedroom in the run box and see if it opens up the share folders.

Network con went out again last night, neither puter could see the other. That was it, final straw. 5 minutes later I had NETBEUI installed on the XP, boom, boom, boom, network working and sharing purrrrrfectly.

hello to find ur files they should be on ur hardrive. hp makes a partation and puts ur ops THERE windows on it so u can do a restore forom it. like holding f1 or something for hp's to start restore. call techs at hp and ask them how u can ge tto them. hey u bought it its urs rite. as for the wireless problem i have same problems i feel there is protocalls missing or bugs still in wireless that need to be worked out as home users use it for things not met to use for. i have 2 routers one is home built (smoothwall.org) other is a dlink (not happy with them) wirless n lan router. the dlink wants to own the lan and i can not stop it and the lappy goes out now and again. sooooo who knows the answer maybe bill does hehehehehe
