i have a router, everything is good. i have 2 machines (main and parent's) hooked into it with perfect net access.....fine. i have a third pc (file serv) id like to get online or at least be able to share files with the one machine (main). the catch is...my router is downstairs and the two machines id like to get talking (main and file serv) are upstairs in my room. i cant run another wire to both upstairs machines into the router becuase of physical limitations. two solutions i have are:

1.) throw another NIC into my main machine upstairs and get a crossover cable from the other machine (file serv) to my second nic. i could share files and get the other machine online using ICS correct?

2.) using a hub i could hook both machines up, and have the wire from my router go into the device link hole in my upstairs hub.....erp..wrong, cant connect to the net through a hub. ( i could however share files with the file serv.)

are there any other solutions i could use to simply get my file serv to see my main upstairs machine? (net connection doesn't matter, simply for file sharing/backup.

It's very odd that #2 didn't work. It would have been my first suggestion, and the easiest one to do. Did you try it in another port besides the uplink one? Did you put something in the port directly next to uplink? Usually you can't use uplink and the port directly next to it (on those small cheap hubs at least). How is your computer getting an IP? From the router?

#1 would work, but it's more work than I'd think it was worth. Plus the net would be down for the server whenever you needed to reboot your main.

ips are set statically...as soon as i plug in the wire coming from floor one (router) to my hub i lose net connection and cant reconnect. i have tried various ports on the hub too. yea its one of those small cheap hubs, hehe its like 4 years old, i found it in a box.

ill try to keep you updated from my class from 6-10 tonight :frown:

I'm at a loss as to why you can't use a simple hub or switch to connect the two computers, it works for me all the time.

You need to run the wire from the router into the uplink port of the hub, and connect the two computers with plain patch cables to two of the hub's ports.

I have a system were i just use a standard microsoft 5 port net hub that my couple of computers hook to then i have my Router hooked to the hub, all computers can get on the internet, and i can fileshare between them (once i got the security settings right) i have one with WinXP & the other with Win98SE. i still cant get on my winxp comp from the win98 one, but i can vice-versa, but i like it that way anyway.
