Networking problem with permissions...

I wanna get file sharing going. I have 2 notebooks and 1 desktop, the desktop is on a different workgroup right now then the notebooks. As they go onsite to a business place often. Both the notebooks are wireless and can see each other and see each others shared folders no problem. They also access the internet (all of them do) the only problem is the notebook also see's the desktop but when I try to access I get the error of not being able to have permission to access the resource and to contact the administrator. What can I do? Thanks guys.

If the desktop is running XP pro then you'll have to check the share permissions (assuming that you created a share). If you do have a share created and you try to access it from one of the laptops, if the user accounts + passwords aren't the same you should be prompted to enter a valid username and password. If no shares have been created and you are trying to access the XP pro desktop with a different username + password that could be why you are getting that error...

If I am not mistaken, since you say that you are a newbie in networking, you have not created login accounts into each computer/laptop right? Which may not be the most safe way of doing this but it is what 99% of users doing networking do.

But, when you don't setup accounts, Windows by default is trying to access the Guest account. Now, you can ofcourse enable/disable the Guest account but there is much more to this (MUCH more).

To solve your issue, you need to tell your desktop to allow Guest access WITHOUT enabling the Guest account. To do this:

1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
2. Expand Local Policies | Security options.
3. Double-click Accounts: Guest account status. Enable this option

No, hit Apply and retry to connect. If you go to the User Accounts you will see that the Guest Account is STILL off and that is the truth. We have just poked a small hole in this for computers within our workgroup.

REMEMBER that ALL computers HAVE to be on the same workgroup to do simple Home networking/sharing.

Good luck.
