Here is the situation - I moved my desktop over from Win2K SP4 to XP PRO SP2 -

And this is a fresh install and NTFS format of XP Pro... right... Anway with Win 2k I had no problem seeing my neighbors network (he has wireless cable modem - that I use to pick up his signal no problem - of course he knows)....

WIth Win 2k - Could see his signal fine and get on the internet - no biggie - I also had NETBUEI enabled and all worked great...

With XP I can see him fine no problem great signal - it's just I can't get on the internet - What I'm I missing - I also have NETBUEI enbaled with XP - it does support it...

When i view wireless networks it says that"windows cannot donfigure this wirless connection...." - yet it sees the wireless network no problen - it's just no internet...

Please help - using laptop right now... so I can see post ASAP - I really need some help - I am hoping the fix is easy...

thanks,
Dan - sweating it out in the Boston area...

have you disabled the Windows Firewall that comes switched ON for all SP2 installations? could be a part of the problem.

Have you asked him if he's enabled any new features on his wireless conection (WEP,WPA). Are you connected to his wireless on your laptop still or are you using a dial up to veiw this thread? If you are still on the wireless with the laptop then we can assume nothing has changed on his end. What wireless card are you using? I have seen linksys cards refuse to attach to my unsecured network at work unless you use their supplied utility. Windows would detect my network and not be able to connect. Then I would have to use there utility to connect and get access.

I am using a belkin card that works fantastic under winn2k pro - I now have everything showing up in my network properties -

before I wasn't getting the wireless network tab but since I disabled Belkin's utility (an using XP's) everything is there now, but I still cannot get on to the interent...

The firewall is disabled and the connection is stregnth is great - I just I'm not seeing the internet...

windows cannot donfigure this wirless connection

That is a service pack 2 message. You have the wireless adapters utility setup as the default even if you think you do not. Try using the belkin utility. It should work better than xp's.

open up a cammand prompt by typing cmd in the run box on the start menu
type

ipconfig /all

find your wireless card config in the ones listed. (there might be more than one NIC listed if you yave a wired NIC in your system). Do you have any DNS or WINS servers listed? What is your IP address. It should most likely be a 192.168.*.*

Also have you called or talked to you neighbor yet to see if he's having network probs. Don't kick your own butt if the prob is on his end.

I have had both at different times - when I had the belkin utility going I could not see the wireless network tab in the card's network properties window...

So at least i thought I was making some progress...

here is something really bizare - When the XP's wireless utility is going... I can go to my connections and see that all is connected and even view wireless connections -

but when I go through IE setup through the new connection wizard view wireless networks in range it says that I am disconnected - these are Identical - one says connected which I know that I am, but the other says I am not....

Anyway - I am stumped - and getting annoyed - because - my wife likes XP - but I was fine with 2K pro - and never had issue... just me whining and compaining.. until this is resolved... Again any help is great... thanks

I didn't mean it would interfere just wanted you to pick the right one and find the settings that are showing up. Double click on the wireless network icon in your sys tray. Go to the support tab. Then click the details button. What is listed. Do the settings, except for the IP address of course, match the ones on your laoptop?

There different - In both Belkin wireless utility - the one on my desktop is - client IP address - 192.168.0.6 - where my laptop is the same with 3 instead of 6 at the end...

Belkin also said that it maybe a fire wall issue still - because I tried to ping their website and it did not go through...

thanks,

some routers don't let pings go through. That is not necasarily your firewall blocking it. What are the DNS settings on the laptop/desktop

Dns seeting are set to automatically - Also I was able to ping the belkin server on my desktop...

I think there is something that is either encryped or my firewall is still blocking something.... not sure...

I know this sounds silly but - The only thing I can think of is that my nieghbors firewall - is making a distinction between XP pro and 2k users - That is the only thing that is different plus the xp firewall on my end - Have had no problems connecting to him before and my laptop sees the internet fine...

Maybe its my user name and workgroup name which is exactly the same it was when I was using 2k...

Hey thanks for all of your suggestions I appreciated bigtime and enjoy the anand community - I look back at this thread in about 2 hrs and probably pick up again... Please feel free to continue to be helpful - as I have tried many of your suggestions...

thanks,
Echo3 - moo
