Oh how I would love to get into one of these rooms and unplug just one of something.

Easy to do with cable that's perfect in length to the inch. Too much work for 'pretty' in a home lab setup, but it is interesting to see how it is done in datacenters.
I bet they all start out this way until a cable goes bad--then who's going to redo all the cable ties? lol...Yea, some DC's are nicely done, others are a fuggin mess lol

Yeah, but the original alarm will exist for years! NOC's just don't think enough to get it fixed, but rather just forget about for the next guy ... twenty guy iterations later and five years the alarm is still present along with ten thousand other antique alarms.A link would go down, a monitoring system would get an alert, the redundant links would barely even notice
I don't miss the heat buildup in those server racks with poor cable management. That's honestly the biggest advantage to having things neat and tidy is airflow and the ability to clean dust easier...but it all comes down to money. Either you have the budget to upgrade things in-place (where it's gonna be a rats nest by the time you finish) or forklift the whole rack.Someday it probably will look like this organic jungle. 😁

Good solution! But I would find myself coming back after a year wondering where this one cable that's disconnected is supposed to go and panic! lol.No way, just run a new one along the trunk and a few extra velcros around the bundle. But far from all start that way.

LOL! Good rules! It explains why in another thread on another site someone was talking about a token ring mau that they still have in their DC and that no one wants to disconnect.DC rule #1, don't touch anything except what you're there for, #2 don't panic, #3 if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

They were talking about how if you stand there long enough the activity light will flash, so it is still running something. Personally, it's great to see old tech like that 'just work' and not be subject to malware attacks because no one cares about it.I hear that. Probably running someone's critical service but the guy who knows is gone.
I can't even see the image on imgur.Oops, seems Imgur won't let me hot-link anymore.
- works fine for me, both here and when it opens in imgurI can't even see the image on imgur.
Interesting. I can't see the image in either place even though other stuff opens on imgur and the page opens and everything loads but the image.- works fine for me, both here and when it opens in imgur
