Networking over powerlines

Powerline networking operates in much lower frequency ranges. All the standards I know of operate at <400Mhz. That said, because Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity does not exist, and the power levels we're talking about are waaaay below what would be needed to induce an auditory effect, I'm very confident this will not cause any issues.

As for Powerline Networking itself, it's one of those things that few people will be able to tell you about performance wise. The infrastructure in a house simply varies far too much from home to home. The general advice is to always buy them from a place you can return them, and be willing to move them around from circuit to circuit to see if you can get them to work the way you want them to. Like Wi-Fi, the stated speeds are far above what you'll realistically see, but some people get good performance, others terrible performance in their applications. You won't really know till you start plugging them in and trying them. The general consensus is that they should be your absolutely last resort over pretty much any other Ethernet technology. Have you considered MoCA to distribute ethernet over Coaxial if you have it in your home already? There are also VDSL Ethernet Bridges that use your phone lines if you have those around in your home.
 
Powerline

The most important variable is how many Breakers on the Main Electrical Panel the signal has to go through, and on which part of the divided 220 VAC phase they are connected to.

Some of the old houses might provide better with Powerline use since in the old days they tended to put many more outlets on the same Breaker.

In Networking, Signal to Noise Ration (SNR) is more important variable than Signal Strength per-se.

Thus, the second important variable is the Electrical noise generated by the electrical appliances that are on the system,

Unfortunately these variables can not be evaluated without expensive special instrumentation.

So the "Trick" is, if you are desperate to use Powerline! Buy it from a vendor with Good return policy. Unbox and install carefully. If does not perform, return.

Also make sure that you have money for Lotto ticket too. The probability to win the Lotto is about the same as to have a real fast trouble free Ethernet over Power line.

My powerline kit is bullet proof. I have an AV1200 kit with built in 5ghz and 2.4ghz wifi. It also has 3 ethernet ports vs. the standard 1 port. It gets 150-165mbps down consistently and full speed up which is around 12mbps. I have a few pro tips and ancient Chinese secrets that I cannot divulge here to achieve such performance.

That's not bad, for power line. My Ethernet run connects at a gig, and iperf tests the link at ~700mbps
