Networking over Firewire

I have two desktops running ubuntu 14.04 adjacent to each other. Both have firewire ports, and I'd like to transfer some large files between them.

What would I have to do to do this transfer over firewire? Do I just have to connect their firewire ports and will the OS's automatically negotiate a network? Once I've done that I can simply use rsync over ssh, right?

One of them is a server and has its ethernet port in use, the other has its ethernet port available, but it is somewhat older and only has a 100Mbps NIC. I was interested in firewire because they both have FW800 ports, so in principle that could be quite a bit faster than 100Mbps ethernet.
