Having a bear of a time setting up my laptop and main sys to see each other. The main has Fat 32 - the laptop NTFS. I am using a USR router and wireless card in the laptop. They both acess the www fine through the cable modem.

I am thinking they might be able to share files, but even if they could - the main could not use the laptops files - as they are NTFS.

If I can get this answered - then I can get on track to get it all to function right.

Thanks

The filesystem does nto affect sharing. Pretty much, only the local kernel sees the file system.

Currently only Win2k/XP has the ability to work with the NTFS file system. It sounds like your desktop might have Win9x in which case it is incompatible with NTFS. So what OS' are you running?

As n0cmonkey said,

. PorBleemo is wrong as far as implying that the different filesystems and different OS's will prevent file sharing over a network.

No - I have XP Pro on the main system installed with fat32 file system. The laptop came with XP Home - NTFS file system.

I guess the main question is - even if I am able to get the file sharing up between the two machines (BIG IF right now) - will the main unit (fat32) be able to use and read those files from the laptop?

Thanks for your replies.

Yes, it will. Here's a good reference: Windows XP Networking Myths Here's an excerpt:
Misconception: Windows 95/98/Me can't read a shared disk on another networked computer if the disk uses the NTFS file system.

Fact: The file system of a shared disk is irrelevant. Every computer knows how to read its own disk and make its contents available to other computers over the network.

File systems don't matter. If you enable sharing on the folder or folders of the XP machine the 98 machine will see it just fine. Just make sure they are in the same work group.

Also I see you have XP pro on the main machine. Why not also convert that to NTFS?
