Networking newbie question...do I need a 1-port or a 4-port router?

I'll be networking 2 computers at home right now, but in the summer it will probably be 3 computers.
I'm planning on buying a router, but don't know which to get...a 1-port or a 4-port? I'm not even exactly sure what "1-port" or "4-port" means. 🙂 What do more ports allow you to do?

Each computer needs a port (usually RJ-45 jack). One port accommodates only one computer or can be connected to Hub/Switch.

If you plan to get to three computers, sharing the Internet, and sitting on the same Network, you should buy Cable/DSL Router with 4 ports.

Sure, unless your router is in the basement, and your computers are upstairs. In that case you would prefer to run 1 cable only. And then you would prefer a 1 port router, and simply plug that into a hub or switch that resided in the room with your computers. And plug your computers into the switch.


a 4 port router is simply a router with a build in hub or switch.
