Can i do this simply using w2k advanced server and an ftp proggy? Can you please give me some pointers, ideas or maybe a tutorial site. Please keep in mind i'm totally new to DSL and networking. thanks for any help,

i used to use warftpd, if you have only one nic, after installing warftpd, it'll automatically detect your ip, which would be what others would use to connect to your machine thru ftp. the latest version that i like was 1.6x (i believe). it's been awhile, now i use linux.. ;)

In order to be able to connect to your machine you need static IP (i.e. your machine need an Internet number that stays the same). The Telecoms consider setting a server as it a violation of your contract, and in orders to discourage the practice most Telecoms configure the DSL with dynamic IP that changes in time.

hey man,

I see that these other guys have not been much help to you.
This is what you do, download a program called Serv-U, its most user friendly, but G6 ftp server is also very nice, and is the one I use. U can find these programs available for download at www.download.com I remember being a newbie and not having a clue. The read me files included with the programs should be sufficient help with getting you started. I would recommend you changing the port from 21 to some obscure number like 8732 or something, so its not as easily tracked by the ISP. just make accounts, set restrictions and u should be ready to go. Lemme know if u need anymore help. Have a good one.

StrangerRanger:

For file transfers over the internet, an ftp server work great. The best ftp server is WarFTPD. You can download it at: http://support.jgaa.com/ under "Download."

Reply if you need help setting it up.

You can do FTP server with most (if not all) OS, not limited to Win2K advanced server (and it will be a waste of resource to use for a light-duty server). If you have NT or 2000 (doesn't have to be server version), you can use the build-in ftp server.

Do not run the internet Win2k Pro ftp server. It is dangerous because you're system is vulnerable. Win2k Pro IIE sucks. There is no way to monitor the connection. FTP servers such as Warftpd give users more control.

I agree Warftpd offers much more functions (and it's free, too). But it's hard for me to understand it will provide higher security strength than the build-in server.

<< Win2k Pro IIE sucks. >>

I think you mean IIS. In some sense it sucks, but it serves basic needs.

thanks for the advice guys. i will check out warftpd etc. but here's another question for you: I know you have to have a static IP to set the server up, and i contacted my ISP and they wouldn't do it, said i didn't have a need. but i did notice reading my material that my IP address only changes each time i reboot the machine. soooo...can i set up the server and leaving it running for a while with the current IP and just change the "settings" when needed? do you think that would be a total pain in the as@? I'm not looking to do full-on server type stuff. i just want certain folk to have certain times they can pull shows down off my rig. it's an occasional thing you know. sound possible?

Warftpd and most other FTP servers will automatically detect the current internet IP. Whenever you start Warftpd and enable the service, it will detect the internet IP. You do, however, have to update the users with the latest IP. There are services that will automatically detect your internet IP and mask your IP as "blah.servicename.net." I do not know the exact cost.
