Networking n00b wants to share files across home network

Hey all, I'm wanting to pull files off my desktop and external drives attached to it through ethernet > router > ethernet > laptop, but I'm a total noob on networking stuff. Both are running vista 64 and if someone could walk me through it or point me towards a good guide I can follow it no problem

Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructions.

General example, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#trusted

Vista File and Printer Sharing- http://technet.microsoft.com/e.../library/bb727037.aspx

You can setup a freeware http server on the computer you want to grab files from the other computer with. Theres quite a few decent free http servers available if you just search google. I am quite good with building networks and setting them up, however I find that taking 10 seconds to install a http server on a home network or whatever network you want to share the files on it's just the easiest and fastest way.

You can also use a 8GB thumb drive to move them over (one or two folders at a time, depending on how large they are)
Easy, fairly quick and just about foolproof

smb shares are okay for wired.

if you want to do wireless or anything else; setup a ftp server on your machine. and use a decent ftp client (flashfxp).

ftp is definitely faster than smb with wifi from what i've found.
