My friend has a mac labtop (powerbook g4) and i have an old PC which I am trying to network right now.
I am using a linksys router for this. Basically Im just trying to get the internet hooked up.
On my computer (the pc) there is a connect icon which is showing some feedback, but I still can't surf the net.
There isn't any connection icon i know of on my friends computer.

If your wondering how I'm online, well then I had to reconnect the net back into my friends computer.

Please, knowledgeable people help. Thanks in advance.

Is your Internet Cable? DSL? When it's plugged into the Mac does he have to log on to get on the net? If you answer those questions I can probably help you.

ok so you say it's a Linksys router? Wired? Wireless? Have you logged into the router with a Web Browser and set it up? For Cable you won't use PPPoE like most DSL requires. Use DHCP if that Linksys has that for an option. If it still does not work with some cable providers you have to clone the MAC Address into the router. Which Linksys is it?

its a wired linksys router. model befsr41
i believe the default settings are already dhcp enabled, but im not 100% sure.

i had the same problem when i set my pc up to my home pc when i had just reformated my pc.
i had to reformat, but this time leave the ethernet cable plugged in.

i dont want to have to any of that this time as i transfered all my programs on my computer now.

sorry it took so long to get back to you. Are you still having the problem? I will later take a few screen shots of the Linksys you have set up for cable and post Links to them so you can see. If it still does not work then your cable needs the MAC address of the NIC card in the router. I will show you where to enter that also. Will get to it in a bit. Just got home.

I have been busy doing finals so I havent got around to that.

Doesnt the net have to be working in the first place in order to configure the router? or can i just hook it up and configure it without having to be online?

I would appreciate the pictures and a step by step process on how i can get these computers hooked up to the net.

Thank you.

Basiclly the steps should go something like this:
Plug the router into the cable modem.
Plug the Mac and PC into the router.
Press and hold the reset button on the router, this should reset all of its settings.
Renew the DHCP leases on the Mac and PC (this may be automatic, or you may want to click the appropreate button in the Network settings, or you could always just reboot the machines)
Both the Mac and PC should be able to access the Internet now, by default, most routers should automatically block all incoming ports, but allow outgoing internet access.

I'm not sure how much detail really needs to be explained here. Macs do DHCP just like Windows does. If you want to share files, have him open up the Preferences app and click on the Sharing icon. There he can turn on Windows Sharing (SMB), FTP acces, or even personal Web server. At the bottom of the window, it'll tell you what needs to be done on the other machine to access that Mac.
