Networking issues all of a sudden

Sooo... I have a SX2840 desktop (Windows 7 Home premium) connected to my router which is an old WRT54G v1.1 (perhaps 5-6 yrs old not sure)...yesterday after a Windows update took place I have been having issues connecting to the internet. It is bizzare because all of them seem to have happened at the same time.

My router will no longer assign DHCP addresses as it was configured (192.168.100.* range) but rather assigns them in the 172.16.100.* range and sometimes does not even assign them (my iPhone and Android tab gets the lease but my desktop does not). Even though my iPhone/tab gets the lease the internet is not active. I am also unable to login to the admin console either from 192.168.1.1 or 172.16.1.1 (the new gateway value)...the router does not respond.

So, thinking my router was toast, I disconnected the router and connected my desktop directly to my cable modem. Doing this I am able to get online just fine with my work laptop but the desktop does not work at all:

- I tried doing a ipconfig /renew but I got the message "RPC server is unavailable". I then checked the non PNP services and DHCP client was unable to start due to dependency not starting. I then discovered that AFD was not even listed in PNP services.

- I have tried winsock reset catalog as well, it did not help

- I have tried sfc /scannow, initially it said it found nothing abnormal, all was fine

- I did a System Restore to the point before the Windows Update, the System Restore screwed up my system a little more as no items in the control panel would load and I got a message "System Restore is not working correctly as the shadow volume service is erroneous" or something like that. I did a sfc /scannow again and it fixed a few files and then the control panel items (services etc.) seemed to come up. AFD still does not appear in the list but the DHCP client service has now started. An ipconfig /renew times out with the message "operation was canceled by the user" which is bogus.

- The integrated gigabit ethernet card seems to be working - when I monitor the status it does correctly identify cable plugged in/unplugged but when I monitor activity it sends packets but received packets is always zero. The NIC's driver status is "device is working properly"

- I did a Network diagnose on the card and it says "The Ethernet device does not have a valid IP configuration" but I cannot see WHY it doesn't have a valid one. If the TCP/IP stack was corrupted then SFC should have fixed it.

At this point I am thinking of trying the following options:

- Get a USB Ethernet adapter to see if that works, I can return it to the store if it does not work.

- If above does not work I can fire up Gateway System Recovery and try a Repair system files option, if that does not work I can say re-install OS but preserve user data.

- Lastly, I plan to re-install the entire OS from scratch (which of course I am trying to avoid!!)

I am exceptionally careful of any virus/malware etc. and I do not think that is the source of a problem. I have downloaded nothing in the recent past. I also have Norton Internet Security active always.

For the record, I am using Google DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Any other ideas?

Since you said that all devices are unable to access the Internet through the router, then it's not a problem with your desktop computer and it's just a coincidence that this happened around the same time as a Windows update.

Do a hard reset of the router (press and hold the Reset button on the back of the router for about 30 seconds). That will reset it back to the default factory settings to make sure it's not an issue with an improper setting on the router. If that still doesn't work, then it's probably time to replace your nearly 10 year old router (the WRT54G v1.1 was made in 2003-2004).

It is a problem with my desktop because the router is out of the picture now, I have connected my desktop directly to my modem and it does not acquire a lease, my work laptop acquires the lease without issues so I know my internet connection and cable modem are good!

I fixed the issue. I re-installed the network drivers, disabled and re-enabled the onboard LAN controller in the BIOS and after a reboot everything worked. I also bought a new Asus RT-N53 dual band router.
