NETWORKING HELL! Getting IP address errors on the network, and cannot receive files on the internet anymore

The new netgear network kit I got has been nothing but trouble so far. I have the netgear FA311 NIC inside my system, and a laptop w/ a built-in ethernet card both on a network switch. From the start I've been getting this error upon windows startup of my main system w/ the netgear NIC:
"The system has detected a conflict for IP address ...... with the system having hardware address 00:02:E3:02:A5:6B."

And then of course in windows the laptop isn't on the network for the desktop and the laptop doesn't show for the desktop. After a while things just sorta 'panned out' and it started working. Then I reinstalled winme, and the same problems have been showing up. Additionally I have been having problems receiving files on the internet via 56k dial-up. I can't get files from my friends on IM or ICQ, but I can still browse fine. It could be my friend too, so I might look further into that later. However, I'd like to get to the bottom of this IP Address problem. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Everythign seems to be configured correctly and exactly as it was when the network was working. I don't know where to start...

you didn't describe how exactly you have everything hooked up. Hub? crossover? dhcp? assigned IPs? might wanna supply some details. What was included with the networkin kit?

sorry, I'm new to this networking stuff. The Netgear kit came with 2 FA311 Ethernet Adapters, a FS105 10/100 Ethernet Switch, and 2 6 foot Ethernet cables. I'm using one of the FA311 in my computer and the built-in ethernet adapter in my laptop. Both are connected to the switch and everything is set to sharing in network properties and in the drives/printers/documents. I used home networking wizard in my network places to set everything up.

what are assigned IPs and how do I set that up? That sounds like the problem, but I'm not quite sure.

oh and btw Gunbuster, they took Winipcfg off of winme :(

use tcp/ip and set the ip of the computerz to 10.0.0.xxx
Be sure not to set the ethernet card with the internet connection to 10.0.0.xxx

I think your problem is that you set the computerz Ip address the same

Right Clik Network Neighborhood, highlight the tcp/ip for the netgear, clik properties/ look for ip address, it should be the 10.0.0.x , and under that, use a subnet of 255.255.255.0 clik ok/ then ok again, windows may ask for the cd/ do that/ save any files you have,(newer 1's), reboot.... do the same with the lappy, but don't use the same addy.. ie use 10.0.0.xx Got it??? :)
