networking gurus... please help

this ties in to what the other person was asking about if it's possible to network a computer using win2k and another computer using winme...

i know it's possible... now i just want to know how to do it.

i've got one computer running win2k with two network cards in it... one nic is connected to the cable modem and i can use the internet just fine... then i have another nic which is connected to the other computer (running winme) with a cross-over cable...

problem is i can't get the two to work quite properly... what network settings do i need to use? i also want to share internet connection... how do i do that? thanks in advance for your help.

oh yeah, and the win2k system is using ntfs, while the winme system is using fat32... is this a problem?

Install TCP/IP and IPX on both of them(IPX isnt essential, but some games use it exclusively for multiplayer).
Then set both comps to IP addresses in the same local net, for instance Comp1 could be 192.168.0.1, and Comp2 could be 192.168.0.2.

Enable file and printer sharing for both comps(though since you have a cable modem, dont bind it to the NIC that goes outside for the Win2K comp.

That should just about do it.

Also, one more thing, make sure that you logon to the WinME comp using a logon name that exists on the Win2K comp or you'll get an access denied error if you try to access it.
For instance, if you logon to the ME comp as keebeen, make sure that user exists on the Win2K comp as well.

And a quick tip, first thing to do to check if the network is working at all is to ping the other comp, if the pings are returned, at least you know the network is up, and if there's a problem, its elsewhere.

You forgot one thing Sunner. Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

Make sure you have "detect automatic settings" checked OFF under internet option of the client. And one real important thing to remember is the gateway for the client needs to be the the IP address of the server's local NIC (the 192.168.x.x) and the DNS entries need to be the same as the server. For example, if you are an @home member the DNS is the same for both clients and servers with the only exception being the Host name for the client will be the client computer name.

ok, i've got the two networked ok now... thanks for all the info.
but i still can't get ICS to work... can i use win2k's built in ICS? or do i have to use something like sygate?
