Networking Games

I have XP on one computer and 98 on the other. I have been trying to get Links 2001 to network between the two computers without any luck. I have two network cards connected with a cross over cable. I have got to be missing something. Hope someone can help. If you need any info on my set up please let me know.

Is the network browsable? Can you ping each PC from the other? What protocol does the game use? What protocol(s) do you have installed? On the 98 box, if you have more than one protocol installed, which one is set to be the default?

Need more info to go with.

When I get back home tonight I will post what protocols I have installed. I have used computers for a long time but networking is all new to me, so please bear with me. On Links 2001 I did try modem to modem and that worked fine. I don't know if that tells anyone anything. The network is browsable. I can transfer files between the two computers fine. As a matter of fact I couldn't beleive how fast files transfered between the two computers. One thing I did notice when I put the network card in the 98 machine is that now it takes it forever to boot up.

If it takes forever to boot up now, that's a likely sign that you have TCP/IP set to use DHCP for address assignment. I'm guessing you don't have a DHCP server running on your network, and you have NetBEUI loaded on both machines. That would mean your boxen can talk to each other for file sharing, but TCP/IP won't work because the machines don't have valid addresses. Try setting one machine with a 192.168.1.10 TCP/IP address (netmask 255.255.255.0) and the other with a 192.168.1.11 TCP/IP address (netmask 255.255.255.0). Once you have done this and rebooted, try playing your game again and see if the machines talk.

Thanks RagManX the IP address worked it the TCP/IP. Nascar racing fired right up but I still couldn't get Links to work. Then I done some searching and found out Links 2001 had a patch to fix a networking bug. Go figure. Well now I have 2 happy kids. Well 3 if you count me. LOL.
