Hi all,

I need some help with a task. So I need to find out what services are required to connect to a website and use its facilities. Anyone know what services are required? Example like DNS service, DHCP service, email service...what else is needed please? Basically I'm after what services are provided by a the server, ISP and my personal wireless router to be used by a client machine to connect to a website, access materials on the website, access videos, upload documents etc.

This is pretty complex. Look up the OSI 7-layer model, and then do a google search for what services run at what layer of the network stack - that should give you a pretty good idea of what relies on what at what level.

There's also a lot that you could do manually, which theoretically eliminates the need for "convenience" services like dhcp and dns.

This must be a school-assignment.

I've never heard the term "network background services". Must be a school teacher using his own words to pose a question.

This question is a good question to ask students. There is no correct answer. Because the question is not precise. But it will make students go out and search for answers. There are *lots* of components that are involved when you look at a webpage. And depending on the situation (what device do you use, which OS is it running, what LAN technology do you use, what access-technology do you use, what ISP, what technologies does your ISP use ?) The correct answer should include dozens, if not hundreds of abbreviations and buzzwords.

But the goal is that you should go look for these yourself. I could give you a list of a hundred abbreviations, and you would relay them to your teacher, and learn nothing.
