I've recently purchased the 3com Router from the Hot Deals section..

I am running Windows XP on my main machine.. and I want to share the Cable Modem service that I'm getting from
RoadRunner ( Dyamic IP ) DHCP with my Laptop Running Windows ME

I need to find the DNS numbers.. but I have no clue how to get it.. since Windows XP is set on automatic.. and it won't even show me my IP address..
I've called RoadRunner.. and they said they do not know the DNS number either..
and I'd have to check Network Settings in order to find it..

I tried the NSLOOKUP and that didn't help..

I dont know what to do..

please help me...

Thank You

I know that with Win 2k, you could get those by dropping out to MSDOS Prompt and typing "ipconfig".... Another way to get it is, plug the ME machine directly into the cable modem.... Have it pick up an IP address then run "winipcfg"... Find your Ethernet adapater, and click "More Info" They should be listed in there.

RoadRunner has the DNS numbers. Hard to believe they actually told you that they don't know what they are. I'd call back and ask to speak with a supervisor and ask him why his employees don't know what's going on with their own network. I haven't played with XP yet, unfortunately, otherwise I'd tell you how to get the DNS numbers from there. I'll look when I get home and post the information.

I've tried getting the cable modem service on my laptop ... but it's no go..

It wouldn't load the DNS servers on my lappy

I got some more info with the ipconfig at the command prompt..

now I gotta figure out what my DNS numbers are..

Pull up a dos prompt and do a "ipconfig /all". It will show you the DNS server numbers.

Is there some sort of a login process in cable? I am a DSL guy, and I don't know how it's going to work for cable connections. But for router config (for DSL), all you need is the login info and DNS if DHCP is enabled.

Does your router support Mac address emulation? If so, you might try typing in the MAC address of your original computer that was on cable and see if that helps. If not, exactly what is going wrong? Is the router not seeing the connection or is it the one computer specifically?

I have no idea if it has MAC emulation or not.

I checked it.. and it did infact have a mac address..

Right now .. I dont care anymore.

I"m gonna just sell the router.. and use 56k on my laptop

it's way too much hassle...

Maybe I should just get the Extra IP address from Roadrunner for 4.95 a month.

that seems like a better solution..~

You should be able to get it set up without too much trouble... maybe the router's just bad.

I dont think it's the router.. all the lights are blinking and working

I think it's my RoadRunner Service..

or even Win XP..

Do you have XP setup to pull the address from the router dynamically? Is the router setup as a DHCP server? Does your non-XP box work?

I just installed a router on my friend's RR cable. It took a little figuring out but having done it once now, is INCREDIBLY EASY.

You don't need DNS Server #'s. Set IP to automatic and DNS to enable. I repeat NO DNS SERVER #'S are required for ATT/Roadrunner.

You then need to spoof the MAC address from the computer that was originally hooked up to your computer onto your router OR you can call them and register the MAC address of the router (which is a major pain in the a$$ because of the long wait time).

PM if you want me to walk you through it. Good luck!
