networking a satellite connection; for those of us who can't get cable/dsl

I recently subscribed to a satellite internet service because I was tired of holding my breath for a cable/dsl connection. The service I signed up for only provides one connection per computer unless you pay a prohibitively expensive amount of money for a "network server" to share the service over more than one computer. When I asked if it would be possible to provide my own server (I've got an old P133 that I thought might do the trick) the Customer Service Rep said I would have to buy their computer. Just wondering if anyone has successfully networked a satellite connection, and if anyone could provide details on how it's done.

I doubt that you would have to buy their computer. All you have to do is find a way to configure your p133 to route the same way that their computer does. Basically all you need is their DNS servers.

networking a sat is no different from a cable "modem" or dsl (if it gives you ethernet out of sat). if so, just use the same tutorials as for cable/dsl modems.

i set my pentium 100 with linux as my router/server/stealth firewall (yeah, it is pretty bad... once i get finished with it)( :) sorry i have to gloat. it has an anti port scanning feature so if you try to port scan me, it will slow your port scanner down indefently or even crash your port scanner! even if you do get a port scan off, you will find no ports, because my computer will not respond to any port scanning techniques sucks as tcp/udp/ack scanning. and once you try to port scan me, you ip address will be blocked from accessing my computer via any means. end of gloat).

anyways, you can setup windows 2000 pro on your pentium 1??, but it will run soooo slow like mine did until i setup linux.

so, if you know a some about linux and want to give it a try, message me, or go on the internet and look up some info (www.linuxhelp.net is a very good website. in the guide.. might be howto, there is a tutorial on setting up a cable modem (which should be similiar to your sat.. i think)

anyways, hope you enjoy, bye bye

Go to Delphi.com and do a search for the Starband forums. The info you want is there.
