Networking 2 PC's (Win XP and 98) with D-Link 704 Router

First, I am networking ignorant, so please bear with me. Just got a new PC with XP and a D-Link 704P to go with an existing Win98 machine and RCA cable modem. Both PC's can get on the internet and email fine, but can't seem to get them to communicate with each other. I have both setup to share files and identified as part of the same workgroup, but when I click on network neighborhood, I get nothing. Any help would be appreciated, especially a simple checklist to follow to get them communicating. I did follow an XP utility for home networking and it even created a floppy to install on the 98 machine, but that did not seem to help either. Thanks.

You may have everything set up so that it "should" share... but unless you have at least one drive (or one folder or something) on one of the computers manually shared, you won't see anything. To do this: double click my computer, right click on the drive you want to share click on properties. Then click the tab: Sharing, and set it to Shared As: ________ . Hit apply and do it on the other comp if you wish.

If you have firewall software or Internet Security software running on either computer, try disabling it and try again.

I was Trying the same thing last night and figured out that I didnot shared any drive or folder thats why it was not showing anything . Also I loaded on my win98 system the REMOTE Terminal. now I can access emulate my XP desktop on my 98 system. its cool, but when I'm trying to access 98's desktop from XP system it's giving me an error. May be I'll try tonight again.

Also in windows 98 there are 2 options for password and sharing, 1 share level access, 2 users from list. Check the user level and type the computer name of your XP system. It will show you the list of all the users under XP including, Administrator, Guest(normally disabled), World...etc. may be i'm not using the correct windows terms/names to explain this but I'll add more to this when I'll reach home from work
