ok ehres my prob i ahve tried this many time before...but my friend and i wanna play counterstrike and unreal tourney and all that good stuff but the problem is that we cant get out computer to connect over my crossconnect cbale i mena they connect his doesnt say it but my win2k machine does...we set up different IPS and put the others as a gateway i heard that u gotta use netbeui but i dont think i have that protocolor install it we trying to use tcp/ip..my crossconnect cable works fine too i get 100 mbps suprisingly instead of 10 and he cant see my comp or i cant see his even if we share drives with eachother anyone ever network the two OS's?????:disgust::confused:

make sure you have client for microsoft networks installed. Also, in win2k you need to create an account for your win98 machine. The account should be named as the username for you win98 machine, not the machine name. Try that and hopefully should work like a charm.

Some basic things to check:

Your 2 PCs have IPs 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
Both have Submask 255.255.255.0
Make sure both have a unique computer name, but the exact same workgroup name

A fairly common gotcha is that two NIC's connected with a crossover might not work. They actually need a switch or a hub in between. I dont know the technical deatils, but some NICs just dont work direct connected to another NIC.
Of course if they are 10/100 cards make sure they are both at the same speed. For playing games just set them 10mb/half duplex in the drivers so you dont have to worry about the NICs doing negotiations. Ah, also dont set the cards for 100/full, you cant do that on a crossover, AFAIK.
