Networked hp890c printer problem (nt4+w2k)

I've got an NT4 print server, with a hp 890C printer on it, i installed the latest NT4 hp drivers on it. That computer is networked with my win2000 box, on which i want to use that printer.
if i do add networked printer, and i select the printer in the browse list, it gives me the message: "the server on which the 'hp deskjet 890C series' printer resides does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you want to install the driver on the local computer, click OK". Then it wants to browse for a .INF file.

The printer also turns up on My network places on the 2k client, but i get the same error when i double click it...

any idea on how to fix this?

Check with the HP support site and see if there is a different set of drivers for Windows 2000 that the ones for Windows NT4. The Win2k machine is trying to copy the NT4 version of the HP drivers from the NT4 machine, and deciding they are not the correct version.

Try here. Hmmmmm. Don't see any for Windows 2000, even though they have Windows XP, 3.1, 95, 98, and NT4. Doh!

According to this HP website, Windows 2000 printer drivers for the HP 890C are included on the Windows 2000 CD. Maybe install the printer from the CD first.

i tried browsing for the .INF file all over the win2k cd. I also tried installing the printer locally first, so the files would be there if i tried installing the networked drivers. But nothing seems to work.

thanks for the help, i really appreciate it, and it would save me from carrying my printer from one side of the house to the other every so often

Wow. I'm surprised the 'install as a local printer first' trick didn't work. I KNOW I've had to do that before. Then you just change the properties on the printer. In Windows 98 you right click the printer icon, choose Properties --> Details. Here you can add a New Port, which would be the network printer's netbios name i.e. //HENRY/DJ690C or whatever.

P.S. I know you aren't using Windows 98, it's just that I am. So I figured out how to do that trick on mine just now...

I had tried to install it as a local printer, then remove it again, and then try again as a networked printer, hoping it would find the leftover drivers, but alas.

I finally got it to work by following your advice, by changing the port of the locally installed printer to a local port called //server/printername.
