Networked game like Doom but without guns?

Would like to utilize the networked computers in my house to play some games w/ my kids (all under 11). The oldest one could handle "Doom" (old game, I know, but one of my classic favs), but does anyone know of any "safer" games for younger kids to play?

Did anyone ever do a mod for Doom to make it kid-friendly? I remember the "Barney" mod (LOL), but as I recall, you could still kill the purple dinosaur.

Are there any games like Doom that are network multiplayer but that shoot paintballs, etc.?

There was a pretty fun dodgeball mod for half life 2. I don't know if your machines can handle that or not.

Otherwise I just googled "first person paintball mod"

A somewhat promising result?
Half Life Paintball mod

I at one time had the Greg Hastings paintball game for my original xbox that was decent. Are you only looking for PC stuff?

Maybe its not the being exposed to guns he is worried about, but rather the shooting and killing people. I know the first thing I was told before my Grandpa would put the rifle in my hands was you never point it at something you don't intend to kill.

Well if kids are stupid enough to make the jump from what you do in a video game to what you do in real life...

Well dude it is obviously a choice the OP has considered. They are his kids and is it looks like he is trying to steer clear of the actual killing games. I can't say I blame him. Either way, you have any suggestions that fall in line with his request?

There was a great paintball mod for HL1. I forgot if it was just HL Paintball or whatever, but I played it a lot and it was fairly popular. The only problem now is no one probably plays it anymore so I'm not sure it would be much good. However, along the same lines, I believe the same team was working on a paintball mod for HL2/Source. Last I checked (a year ago maybe) there was not much news. I'm not sure if there has been any release or the project is still active even. There might be more than one paintball mod for HL2 though. Hopefully one of them is released, decent and popular enough? I wouldn't mind myself, as I really liked the HL1 paintball mod.

There are paintball games for PC but pretty sure they are really budget and weak. That's why the HL1 mod was so great as it was far better than the retail games. Plus maybe it would spark your kids interest and get them into paintball for real. I know the main reason I got into the mod was because I played it in real life.

Mechwarrior games maybe. Still have guns and lasers, but you're shooting a robot, not a person; and there's no gore.

Digital Paint for Quake 2. I used to be so highly addicted to that mod about ~10 years ago. It's completely free.
Damn, I can't believe they are still updating it! I might have to play again!!

Oh and it's stand alone now! I don't even need to dl quake 2! I hope some peeps are playing right now!

Only a couple people :(

I don't understand. If they're stupid enough, then it's okay for them to kill people?

He's a parent, he can choose whether his kids will play certain games

Why the backlash against the OP actually trying to be a decent parent? That's more than most parents do. I'm sure as his children get older and mature into responsible teens and adults, neither he nor the children will have issues playing mature games.

Well, there really is nothing wrong... I played Doom around the age of 9-10 and I've never had a violent bone in my body. It never made me want to use a gun or any of that nonsense that over-protective parents come up with.
