Network was down all morning!

Well, after an exhausting week of calls and problems, I walk in this morning to find my other co-workers on the phone, frantic. I didn't even have time to eat my breakfast. Our network was down. Emails could not be accessed, intranet was down, internal software that connects between offices in other states- DOWN.

Our internet connection was down from MCI. We had a backup, but it was a slow backup connection.

NOT A FUN DAY!

you guys need a new network architect. That doesn't happen if it is built properly.

These days there is no excuse for a network to "go down".

this past week @ work our network was horrible....

Wednesday it was down from 6:30AM-2pm or so....Thursday it was down again in the morning for about an hour. They fixed it but about an hour later was down again. Then today (friday) we had no network drives ALL day.

I have a pretty good feeling that if this was a business working for profit, some of the network IT staff would be fired....

Redundancy is pretty much all it takes. Unfortunately being 100% redundant at every point of failure means basically doubling the cost of the installation. This is why lots of IT managers won't do it.

No single point of failure (this is the design aspect, basically every piece is redundant). 2 or 3 different carriers.

but I agree, if its SO important to get these sorts of things out, then make a decent backup setup.

but I agree, if its SO important to get these sorts of things out, then make a decent backup setup.

Well, we are close to hitting $1billion, so we are of course not small. I agree with you, there should be no way for the network to go down. I am new on the job and would love to implement a new system, anyone want to help me? Ideas people

I'd be more than willing to consult.

Good network/security architects are hard to find. You wouldn't believe the complete "messed up crap" I run into.

Well, we are close to hitting $1billion, so we are of course not small. I agree with you, there should be no way for the network to go down. I am new on the job and would love to implement a new system, anyone want to help me? Ideas people

You were hired to do those types of things, no? Are you then not qualified for your job?

There are very good reasons why it could "go down" when cost is a primary factor.

meh, cost isn't that big of a deal. just depends on how important communication is.

As I said. I've worked for many places that couldn't afford much down time, but also did not have the money to ensure redundancy. <shrug>
