Network upgrade gone awry

boomerang

Well I just added a third computer on the network at the wife's office. I was uncertain what would be best, a hub or a switch. So I emailed the linksys people and they recommended the switch. It had a rebate on it too. 😀

Now ICS no longer works. It was working fine when there were only two computers with a crossover cable. Now with the switch neither of the two can access the internet. Of course the machine with the modem works fine. Dialup is all that's available.

I intend to switch over to, most likely Sygate, for various reasons but I am curious as to why ICS would no longer work. I suspect it has something to do with ICS only working with DHCP. And of course I want be certain that Sygate will work with the switch.

I am pushing the limit of my knowledge network wise here. There are many facets of it I have no understanding of.

I'm not the most networking savvy, but make sure you get the trial of Sygate before you buy it because if it doesn't work you'd hate to waste your money on it.

Did you get rid of the cross-over cable when you added the switch?

Is your network laid out like:

Internet Access--->Computer One-->Switch-->Computers 2 and 3?

Computer One have a modem and a NIC going to switch which then goes to the other 2 computers.

What OS's are teh computers running?

Can you ping each computer on the network?

Stinks that you have to share dial-up, I've done that before.

Good point konichiwa, thanks for the advice.

purplehayes,

Yes the crossover is gone, actually remade.

Yes

The modem is not going to the switch. If it needs to, how do you connect a phone line into a switch?

What OS's are teh computers running?
Win98SE

Can you ping each computer on the network?
I haven't actually tried that, but they can share programs and see each other on the network, so I assume it's OK.
