Alright, recently my network has been going to hell. I try to copy files from my win2k server to my winme client and #1 its slow (its a 10/100mbit ethernet) and #2 it often tells me that "the network resource is no longer available". Sometimes it decides to black out my screen and give me some small vertical lines on top of the screen that go all the way from one side to the other, and sometimes it just reboots by itself. Right now the NIC shares an IRQ with the mass storage controller, however when i moved the NIC to a different slot and it was sharing with the soundcard, i still had the same problem. Ive also tried different cabling and different ports on my hub. my roomates computer connects / copies files just fine.

could my NIC be dying?

please help... all my other computer stats are listed in my sig's rig (Workstation).

EDIT: Oh crap, I forgot to mention that normal internet usage is fine through my network (ie browsing, ICQ, AIM, gaming) just copying files that screws things up...

NICs don't like to share resources, and are very fussy about the PCI slots they're in. Try in PCI slot 2 or 3. If you're using win9x, before taking out an adapter be sure to uninstall it in device manager, else you end up with duplicate hardware entries and conflicts.

If nobody else gives any better advice, go to some retail store and pick up a new 10/100 NIC for under $20, i've used linksys, netgear and SMC personally with no problems, make sure you get a PCI one, much easier to setup - your time is probably worth more than the hassle to fix it. If it doesnt fix the problem, you can always return it back to the store

I think obenton is on the right track. Put the NIC in the PCI slot that you used when it was sharing with the sound card, and remove the soundcard. This may not solve the problem, but at least it will prove (or disprove) what the problem is.
