I have two PC's networked. Both are connected to my Linksys 54G wireless router. They are hard wired.

One PC uses a P5B Deluxe motherboard and the other a P5E-VM HDMI motherboard.

When transferring files between the two PC's the transfer rate seems to be about 8MB/sec, which is about 64mbps. I see network cards advertised as 10/100/1000, what does that mean and should I be getting higher transfer rates?

Thats about right for 10/100
For 10/100/1000 both your network cards and your switch/router must support 10/100/1000

Your speeds are right for 100mbs ethernet.

8 MBs is around 80 Mbs including overhead. So your running around 80 percent utilization with is normal for 100 Base-T. Ideally you should have no problem getting 95-98% utilization, you can use task manager to see what your network utilization is.

So if I get a wireless router that supports 1000mbps I can get that speed?

Yes, or even a gigabit switch. Just put the switch behind the router and hook the gigabit computers to it. Then run a cable from the switch to the router and it all should work

Yes, It would have a total of 3 wires going to it (not counting Power) One to PC1 another to PC2 then the third be a uplink to the router. Like that everything should work fine. Leaving you 2 ports to hook more computers too.
