I would like to find out what routers or switches some network nodes are attached to. However, tracert does not return any nodes, but I know this certain node is hanging from a router with its onw IP, does anyone know of a tool that will do this?

Thanks,

You could download the SNMPc demo and have it run discovery... if any of these routers or switches have community strings configured, they should show up, and SNMPc will put together a nice map for you. Traceroute only goes out your default gateway, as will other traffic unless your gateway router has PBR (Policy-Based Routing) configured.

I was thinking about that, but made the assumption that he wanted to find out from a workstation, and that he didn't have access to the router itself (which makes sense, because you'd think if he had access, he'd know the network topology). Plus, it would only work if it was a homogenous Cisco network.

well, i do have access to the switches, routers, etc etc, and nope i think we have like one non cisco switch, and well I do not know the topology here, since I just started working, I have one map but my boss who has been here for like 30 years says that my map is not right, while I am quite sure it is, so I want to show him some tool that will display the way things are layed out.

thanks for the advice,
