bad patch cable. make sure you are using a patch cable from teh cable modem output to the wan input on the router. Not a cross-cable.

and a patch cable can be either a crossover or a straight through

thanks for the clarification, though, i was typing shorthand and too fast for my own good. I do know the difference between a crossover and straight through cable.

Fixed the problem. A note to all people who buy this router: If your modem only does 10mbs, change the WAN port from 100mbs to 10mbs (newer firmware does it automatically). Thanks for the help.
