I have a new D-Link DI 524 Wireless router. I have a 3COM Sharkfin modem. I cannot get the Sharkfin to connect on the WAN port of the router. I have tried the suggested method, but I can't get it to work. Any ideas? (comcast is my ISP, BTW)

Spoof the Mac address.

Hooray! Help, now elaborate...

give a mouse a cookie, he'll ask for a glass of milk......

Find out what the MAC address of the device that used to connect to the cabel modem, then spoof it (copy it) to the mac cloner on the linksys router setup page.

oh and edit: thats a d-link router you are talkign about, not linksys

In order to spoof the MAC address, you have to login into your router.
Go to 192.168.2.256.
Login under the default username and password usually "admin" or "password".
Find the MAC Address spoof controls in the subheader.

Tried that, the router flat out doesn't seem to see the modem. Can't renew IP or anything. No light on int the WAN categaory. Updating Firmware now.

bad patch cable. make sure you are using a patch cable from teh cable modem output to the wan input on the router. Not a cross-cable.

I think I have found the problem. Supposedly the WAN port runs at 100 mbs instead of the 10mbs that I need. Looking on how to change it. Thx for the helpl.

crossover
and a patch cable can be either a crossover or a straight through

doesn't matter as the wan port on the router will autodetect to whatever the output on the cable modem is; the modem is likely at 10mbps and the router wan is set to autodetect.
