I need a solution for network storage that Win 8 and a Win 7 computers can access.
I have an old pc that I could use but I was wondering if there was another way to do it? Something small (cheaper the better) that I could tuck away and plug into my router?
One pc accesses the network via wired and the other wirelessly.
Thanks.

What you are describing sounds like one of these:

Looks like you just add hdd.
I was thinking smaller but that's right along the lines.
Thanks.

Yeah, those things seem really expensive for what you get. If you only have a couple hard drives, I would just put them in the old PC.

Honestly if you have a little technical know-how, install linux and run a Samba share on there. . . add a few drives, it doesn't need a lot of memory or a fast CPU. There are MANY step-by-step guides around and if not, we're always available here in AT-N!

There is so many ways to go about it that it really hard to give someone else sound advise.

1. If you have a Router with USB that is server capable (the Cisco E3000 and E4200 is an example), you can plug into it a HD enclosure and the result is a simple very inexpensive Network Server.

2. If you have an old computer that is Not very big (or may be can be put in a smaller case), and it is Not a Power Guzzler then use it, usually provides the best Network speed and flexibility for the money.

3. For more elaborate system that provide good backup capacities and multiple serving capacities you can build special Home server based on Windows home Server, or Windows 2012 Essential (expensive).

4. Then there is all the NAS boxes that are either expensive, or slow, or both. Some of them have easy RAID concoction that are popular among "Rights Bragging" Enthusiasts.

Just use the old PC with this:

www.lime-technology.com

Takes next to nothing from a resource standpoint; case, old CPU & Motherboard and 1 GB of RAM. It's free unless you use more than 3 HDDs and it can grow as needed just by adding new drives.
