Network Storage Suggestions

I have 2 Apple macbooks and 1 Windows Vista64 desktop in my home and a collection of software and media files I want to share.

I don't want to use my Vista machine as a file server because I don't like to leave it on all the time.

I figure my options are:

1: Buy an NAS. Which do you suggest? I had a Linksys SLU2 and it caused me to lose 500GB of data when I corrupted a drive, so I refuse to go with that one again. If I go with an NAS it needs to support SATA drives and I'd prefer one that is empty and I add my drives. I think the DROBO looks awesome but seems way more expensive for not much added features.

2. Build a file server machine. I guess this is a better option, but means more money, but more flexibility. I am also concerned that it will suck down more power too.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
